Block lengths

@SHB2000 On the block of an IP: There were two edits from the IP. In this case, it seems (global user contributions at toolforge) the IP has made the same edit all over the place over a couple of days. I suppose two weeks is good in this case, until you know whether the user returns.

If a user returns regularly from the same IP address and there are no other edits from there, one can suppose it is a stable address of the user or a proxy available to them (open or not). If the vandalism is low volume, blocking and reverting as they pop up works, but if you have better things to do and the user isn't local, longer blocks, such as your two-weeks one make sense – even six months if you get frustrated.

However, you should be very soft-handed with anybody who might know Nauruan: they are not too many, so the likelihood that some of them is a real vandal is low, and the volume of edits by Nauruans will hardly be overwhelming. The same considerations apply to any Nauruan IP. You could turn bored pupils to valuable contributors, and you won't want to make a difficult time for a teacher trying a Wikipedia project, even if there are problems.

If you cannot infer whether an edit is from a Nauruan or a global vandal, I suggest short blocks – you'll probably see sooner or later.

(Your edit filters hindered me from including a live link to toolforge. Just remove the nowiki-tags – and perhaps check that I'll be counted as established in not too many days).

LPfi - also, this user has made edits under different IPs including 177.228.68.130. But thanks for your response. And also,

I've disabled the filter, though it's to prevent spambots. SHB2000 (talk) 10:22, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's not a problem for me. You still might want to refine it – a link to some page telling your background is common on good faith user pages, and some might just throw in a link to a user page elsewhere. There is probably some pattern among the spam bots that you could use in the filter – you could even give advice on how to get around it, as bots hardly read that anyway. You don't have to tell how the filter works, but it could advice the user to tell more about themselves (if you allow the links if there is other text) or to wait with the user page until they have been editing for a while (if you disallow links only for new users). –LPfi (talk) 11:09, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've currently reenabled the filter. SHB2000 (talk) 02:36, 23 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
